The Rajasthan Socio Economic Development Project (RSED) in Banswara and Dungarpur, Rajasthan seeks to empower the community of farmers through developing a pro poor goat value chain among other broader objectives for poverty alleviation. Goat rearing is being widely practiced in the region and this study was undertaken to analyze the same in the two districts to put forth the potential to generate higher income through developing the goat enterprise as a community. Heifer International has partnered with four NGOs in the three blocks of the project for implementation.
The study identified necessary interventions and project activities to be implemented through Self Help Groups (SHGs) which have been created by the partnering institutions in the three blocks. After the process of trainings and capacity building, the goat enterprise will be developed through Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) in each block in order to benefit the community by lowering the production costs through scale and earn higher returns through greater bargaining power and volume of sale. A detailed value chain and market analysis was done in order to develop potential value chains and business plans for the FPOs so as to ensure better production and higher prices for the farmers.
